Baldur's Gate 3
5
Baldur's Gate 3 was originally revealed with a CGI trailer at a conference for the Google Stadia cloud gaming service in June 2019 as part of an Early Access exclusivity deal that would ultimately be cancelled when Stadia was shut down in 2023. The game's director Swen Vincke touted the service at the time for its purported accessibility, and the potential for in-game community feedback to directly affect the game's development and playthroughs via Stadia's Crowd Choice feature. However, Vincke later expressed regret over having the game be revealed this way, calling it "a really stupid deal" due to the challenges of releasing an Early Access build to a second platform, but that "it allowed me to pay for the CGI."

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Attachment Shortly after the game's release in 2020, the government of China ordered gray market online storefronts to stop selling the game. While no official reason was given for the ban, fans and analysts speculated that it was due to players in Hong Kong using the game's customization features and online connectivity to broadcast messages in support of protests that were occurring at the time against changes to the region's extradition laws. Around the same time, the game was also used by Joe Biden's campaign team to advertise his candidacy in the 2020 United States presidential election by creating a dedicated island and customizable items.

16 days after the election in November, Nintendo updated the game's Usage Guidelines for Businesses and Organizations, significantly narrowing how they could use the game for advertising. This included a rule requesting that offensive content be refrained from being created in-game, along with a statement asking to "refrain from bringing politics into the Game." However, this rule does not clarify what "politics" specifically Nintendo wanted to keep out of the game, and it appears to be in effect for any content created after the update, as it seems that none of the Hong Kong protest content or the Biden campaign's promotional content were taken down.

Attachment In 2021, as part of a collaboration with the children's yogurt brand Danimals, Sonic Dash added brand mascot Bongo to the game as a playable character, unlocked by scanning a QR code on the back of Sonic Dash-branded Danimals products to download the game. This method could also be used to unlock the "Pirate Sonic" and "Captain Shadow" character variants, which could be earned by collecting all four birthday-themed items on the track, including a Danimals smoothie pack.

Mario & Luigi, with their appearances from the promo art for the Atari 2600 version of Mario Bros., are featured on the box art of 32-in-1, but no Mario-related games are included. The rough drawing of the art, believed by some to be a rough sketch for, or traced from, an "Atari Advantage" poster promoting the Atari 7800 and other products, led some to believe the compilation was a bootleg.

Dislyte
1
Attachment In 2023, the YouTuber Markiplier collaborated with Lilith Games to appear as a collectible hero in Dislyte. In-game, he is a space engineer and temporary member of the Esper Union, having supposedly traveled to Dislyte's world through space and possibly time. While Dislyte released a CGI trailer for the collaboration, Markiplier also made his own video to advertise it titled "I Was Abducted...", where he talks directly to the viewers about how he was "abducted" into the world of Dislyte and his experiences there, seemingly losing his sanity over the course of the skit, until it eventually cuts to him advertising the game normally and remarking how he is both in the game and real-life at the same time.

Super Mario Maker 2
1
Super Mario Maker 2 is the first Mario game to be released during the Reiwa era – the reign of Naruhito as Emperor of Japan – following the abdication of Akihito on April 30, 2019. To commemorate this, Nintendo of Japan's Instagram account posted a video concurrently with Naruhito's ascension on May 1 where Mario travels through each of Japan's imperial eras since the franchise's inception, with each one being represented by a different style in Super Mario Maker 2. The Super Mario Bros. style represents the Shōwa era (Hirohito's reign from 1926 to 1989), the Super Mario World style represents the Heisei era (Akihito's reign from 1989 to 2019), and the Super Mario 3D World style represents the Reiwa era. Coincidentally, although Super Mario 3D World was released during the Heisei era, it would later be ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2021, two years after the Reiwa era's onset.

When it was announced that Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's paid DLC characters were due to be revealed, it was with a tweet reading "Back to the lab again". Some theorized this was a tease for either Jimmy Neutron or Jenny Wakeman, both highly-requested characters with a technology theme. However, this seems to actually be a reference to a livestream by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate YouTuber GimR from two days earlier. GimR advertised the livestream for days prior, promising a new technique that would change the game's competitive scene, only to fail to actually start the stream due to technical issues. During the time he was live, he played a looping intermission animation depicting him as Dexter from the Cartoon Network series Dexter's Laboratory and playing the song "Back to the Lab" by Prince Paul and Wordsworth for over an hour. This mistake would become a meme within the Super Smash Bros. community for a short while afterwards. Ultimately, Jenny, Rocko and Hugh Neutron, the latter two not being related to technology, were revealed, and GimR would separately reveal the promised new technique, the "Slingshot", two days after the failed livestream.

Goddess of Victory: Nikke
3
On January 11, 2023, the game's official Thai Facebook page posted an advertisement that was quickly met with backlash from the Thai player community. The ad depicted a player engaging in the game due to him not enjoying his birthday party. Entranced by the anime characters' buttocks physics in an erratic manner, his behavior gets interrupted and questioned by a partygoer who gives him his birthday cake with candles. He then wishes for the characters Anis, Rapi, and Marian to appear in real life, and in a vision prior to blowing out the candles, the three arrive in his home and proceed to twerk in front of him, simulating the game's attack animations. The advertisement was heavily criticized for depicting the player base as perverts who only play the game for the attractive characters, prompting the developers to issue an official apology in Thai and take down the ad. However, the removal of the ad caused another round of backlash from a different part of the fanbase, one that was already upset with the developers after a new character costume had been released with more clothing than initial leaks for a winter holiday event had suggested, leading to accusations of censorship. Reportedly, some fans even went as far as to say that there was nothing wrong with the ad for "being honest about why some players are attracted to the game."

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
1
Attachment Aang and Korra were first revealed for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl on the Xbox Podcast with footage from their respective trailers. The CGI portion of Korra's trailer was not played, and following the reveal, Aang's trailer would be posted to YouTube, but not Korra's. This led some to believe that a CGI trailer for Korra was never actually made until May 2022, when a YouTuber named socks dude discovered the trailer on the website for i95Creative, the studio that edited the promotional material for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

Darkened Skye
subdirectory_arrow_right M&M's (Franchise)
2
Darkened Skye came about as a result of Simon & Schuster Interactive attempting to acquire the M&M's license for use in gaming, due to the popularity of the Spokescandy mascots. Skittles was simply a back-up option in case the M&M's deal fell through, but both licenses were acquired. While Dale DeSharone, one of the game's executive producers, believed it should have been aimed at a younger child audience, Mars wanted to attract an audience of people in their 20s, because that demographic did not buy Skittles as much as people in their 30s and older, though they were also adamant that the game couldn't be violent. The game's aesthetic was inspired by a series of late-1990s high fantasy Skittles commercials.

Collection: Mario Kart
1
Attachment In 2016, Nintendo entered a legal dispute with MariCar, an Osaka-based company offering tourists Mario Kart-themed tours of the city using modified go-karts. The service included costumes based on the Mario Kart roster and alluded to the games' items in its advertising, jokingly asking customers not to attack each other with "banana peels" or "red turtle shells." Nintendo filed a complaint with the Japan Patent Office in September, arguing that the company's trademark was deliberately over-evocative of that for Mario Kart. Four months later, however, the office denied Nintendo's request, noting that "MariCar" was not a common abbreviation for Mario Kart, and thus the two trademarks did not conflict.

As the Japanese legal system does not include fair use protections for parodies, Nintendo subsequently sued MariCar the following month for copyright infringement due to the unauthorized inclusion of Mario character costumes. The case was ultimately decided in Nintendo's favor in September 2018, with MariCar being forced to drop the Mario Kart iconography and pay Nintendo ¥10 million (roughly equivalent to $89,000 USD) in damages. The company attempted to appeal the case to the Japanese Supreme Court, who rejected the motion in December 2020 and increased the fine to ¥50 million (approximately $483,000 USD). MariCar has since rebranded as Street Kart in the wake of the lawsuit.

Franchise: Hello Neighbor
subdirectory_arrow_right tinyBuild (Company)
1
Attachment When the first episode of the Hello Neighbor animated series debuted on YouTube, series publisher tinyBuild unprofessionally and unsuccessfully attempted to encourage MatPat of The Game Theorists and The Film Theorists YouTube channels to make a video on it by sending him public messages on Twitter such as "I believe @MatPatGT will enjoy dissecting this frame by frame" and "Yes @MatPatGT you should totally reply to our DM". These tweets have since been deleted, and have become a minor meme of sorts. tinyBuild CEO Alex Nichiporchik would later claim on The Game Theorists' subreddit that he felt the tweets were "the cringiest moment of [his] career".

In 2024, shortly before MatPat's retirement from YouTube, he would analyse the cartoon frame-by-frame to pay tribute to the meme.

Pikmin 4
2
Attachment During the pre-release to Pikmin 4, many fans of the franchise were upset that the game did not recieve a larger marketing push from Nintendo, given its spotty sales history. In response, a large swathe of Pikmin fans took to the PixelStar service (which allows individuals to cheaply buy temporary advertising space that would usually be reserved for wealthy corporations in Times Square in New York City) to display Pikmin memes and fan art as a form of unsanctioned advertising. The total amount of money spent by Pikmin fans was estimated by MeriStation USA to be $300 minimum.

Pikmin 4 would end up becoming the best selling installment of the Pikmin franchise. This result most likely has much more to do with the popularity of the Nintendo Switch relative to the GameCube and Wii U, but given how major an advertising space like Times Square is, it isn't completely impossible that the PixelStar advertising could have contributed to the game's sales.

According to a Japanese promotional tape, earlier versions of some of the special weapons function differently than they do in the final game:
• Star Crash was a single attack that homed in on enemies rather than being used as a shield.
• Gravity Hold stopped time instead of defeating all enemies on screen.
• Gyro Attack did not have a limit and it could be used in multiple directions at once.
Metaphor: ReFantazio

On December 11, 2023, Atlus's official Twitter account "Atlus_jp" posted a message about the game to address fan expectations stemming from the larger commercial and critical success of Persona 5, revealing that despite the fantasy RPG game being different from how Persona 5 works as a modern RPG, it would be made with the same mindset that resulted in that game. They stated that the game is a "commemorative title that marks the culmination of Atlus' policy of 'originality and empathy' through the fantasy RPG genre, and is not simply a nostalgic return to the roots of the past". The game's director Katsura Hashino previously described Metaphor as being a "third pillar" for Atlus, with the key themes for the game being "Facing your fear", because "If you stand still in fear of uncertainty, you will never be able to move forward".
