On January 9, 2023, a report was released by GamesIndustry.biz revealing that over 20 developers who worked on The Callisto Protocol were not included in the game's end credits, including multiple full-time developers and other key contributors. The decision to leave out these developers was described as "egregious" by one unnamed employee, while another accused the game’s developer, Striking Distance, of "playing favorites" and only crediting those that "they liked or had some sort of relationship with". The report also highlighted the intense work culture at Striking Distance with a controversy involving the studio's director Glen Schofield in September 2022, where he made a tweet about his employees working "six-seven days a week" for "12-15 hour days". At the time before the report's release, this tweet about the crunch culture at the studio was roundly criticized; it was later deleted and Schofield issued an apology, stating that the studio valued "passion and creativity, not long hours." In June 2023, an update was released for the game that added the names of over 50 previously uncredited developers to the credits, a notably higher head count than the numbers in the original report. These credits were added to the "Miscellaneous" group, which originally had only 18 names, and was also now renamed to "Additional Development".

In a 2021 interview with The Washington Post, the game's director Neil Druckmann revealed that the scene where Abby murders Joel using a golf club was inspired by a real-life incident. When Druckmann was 16, he was accidentally hit in the head with a golf club by a friend at a driving range, which resulted in him needing 30 stitches and left him with a permanent dent in his skull. Druckmann initially planned for Abby to paralyze Joel with a knife, but feeling that this attack was more suited for Ellie than Abby, he decided to use a golf club instead, as he wanted something different and personal.

After the scene was discovered when hours of content from the game leaked online months before release, it became the subject of much controversy and criticism, with some fans of the game feeling that it was gratuitous and unnecessary, especially when the next gameplay segments after watching the "fan-favorite" main protagonist of the first game get murdered force the player to control the murderer as a new protagonist. Players also criticized the game's overall anti-violence and pro-forgiveness message as being "too on the nose". Druckmann responded to the controversy on Twitter by replying with various golf-related GIFs to specific tweets or by "making offhand golf club jokes". Later on when the golf club's real-life origin was revealed, he joked that the game's detractors were correct about him having "brain damage" from the incident.

He went into more detail about the character and players' reactions to her scenes in a 2020 interview with Eurogamer prior to release, stating that he wanted players to hate Abby and eventually empathize with and forgive her upon learning the rest of her backstory. He called the "dehumanis[ing]" and "horrifying" player reactions to Abby "completely human. It's what we do", and that his goal was to make players reflect on "the other perspective" when feeling intense emotions like wanting to take vengeance in real-life incidents. During development, Naughty Dog staff were similarly divided about the scene, with Druckmann commenting in 2024 that there were people who "got it" and a that there was a "minority" of people who were "stuck on how violent it is, and how dark and quite cynical it is about mankind."

Abby's actress, Laura Bailey, initially defended the character's choices before release, claiming she knew the scene would receive backlash and that the leak had caused players to form "barriers" without fully understanding the character. However, upon playing the game at release, she expressed more empathy towards players that hated Abby, questioning the way she portrayed the character and "why she was cast", before eventually going on to "acclimatize" to her. She also commented on negative emotions while filming Abby's scenes that were "very heavy on loss and grief", and how they were difficult to leave behind after filming. On the other hand, her favorite scenes to film as the character were more "joyful" moments including flashback scenes with Owen, or those that developed Abby’s relationship with Lev and Yara.

When the first episode of the Hello Neighbor animated series debuted on YouTube, series publisher tinyBuild unprofessionally and unsuccessfully attempted to encourage MatPat of The Game Theorists and The Film Theorists YouTube channels to make a video on it by sending him public messages on Twitter such as "I believe @MatPatGT will enjoy dissecting this frame by frame" and "Yes @MatPatGT you should totally reply to our DM". These tweets have since been deleted, and have become a minor meme of sorts. tinyBuild CEO Alex Nichiporchik would later claim on The Game Theorists' subreddit that he felt the tweets were "the cringiest moment of [his] career".

In 2024, shortly before MatPat's retirement from YouTube, he would analyse the cartoon frame-by-frame to pay tribute to the meme.

On August 18th and 19th, 2014, several weeks before Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS launched in Japan, one of the most influential leaks in the series occurred. Footage of the gameplay and the roster (including fighters who were not announced by Nintendo at the time) were uploaded to 4chan, and then YouTube. The legitimacy of the leaks were brought into question by fans (such as the consistency of the rosters compared to the one that was shown at E3 that year), with some speculating that the leaks originated from an employee connected to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), leading fans to refer to the leak as the ESRB leak. It was not until Nintendo took down the YouTube videos very shortly after they were uploaded when they were confirmed to be legitimate. Days later, Shulk would be revealed for the game in a Japanese Nintendo Direct, confirming the rest of the game's unannounced roster.

In 2023, it was discovered that the leaker was a child of a Nintendo of America employee. According to a DidYouKnowGaming? video researching the history of various video game leaks, the employee recorded footage of the game in action, which would be sent to the ESRB for review. The child gained access to it and shared the footage with his friends, before spreading out of control. Nintendo of America fired the employee shortly after word got out.

On September 25, 2010, Level-5 employee Jiro Ishii accidentally ousted the game's existence via a tweet to Square Enix employee Jin Fujisawa that stated in Japanese:

"Huh? Oh, Gyakuten XX. I'm making it, with Mr. Takumi!"

This started rumors of a new Ace Attorney game being developed by Level-5, due to the trend of newer Capcom games from established franchises being developed externally (i.e. DmC: Devil May Cry being developed by Ninja Theory). Ishii quickly covered up the mistake later that day, tweeting out:

"A misunderstanding seems to be spreading, so let me say that I'm currently working only on Time Travelers."

Palworld (2024)

Following the Steam Early Access release of Palworld on January 18, the developers faced accusations of copying Pokémon models for the designs of the game's Pals. The allegations were made by a Twitter user named byofrog, who claimed that some of Palworld's creature models were directly copied and edited from 3D models ripped from Pokémon games. These allegations were criticized for scaling the Pokémon and Palworld models to be comparable in size, leading to claims that edited models were not reliable or accurate evidence. byofrog claimed in response that because the models from each game loaded into modeling software at different sizes, scaling them appropriately were the only necessary edits made to compare them, and that the models' meshes, proportions, and other fundamental features were not edited.

Takuro Mizobe, the CEO of Palworld developer Pocket Pair, denied the allegations, calling them "slanderous", and also stated that Pocket Pair has "no intention of infringing upon the intellectual property of other companies". On January 25, The Pokémon Company released an official statement confirming they were aware of a flood of inquiries about "another company’s game released in January 2024", and that they were currently investigating them.

When the Smiling Critters, an in-universe toy line heavily featured in Chapter 3, was first revealed on Mob Entertainment's Twitter account, the image posted featured the full line-up of characters. However, an hour after posting this, a second version of the line-up was posted, this one removing the character CatNap. The reason for this would be revealed in a video titled "CatNap Recall", which was first discovered through an elaborate ARG held by the developers to tease Chapter 3, and also serves as the intro for Chapter 3. The video depicts a news report centered around the Smiling Critters, which reveals that CatNap was removed from the toy line after parents began to report that their children had experienced violent nightmares after inhaling the scent the toy emitted.

Franchise: Sonic The Hedgehog

"TailsTube" is a webseries that began airing on March 22, 2022. Described as a "fun and informative, Tails-hosted show about all things Sonic", the series is hosted by a VTuber version of Miles "Tails" Prower, as he answers questions from fans about the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, often featuring special guests from throughout the series. The series is notable for explaining various aspects of the series' lore. For example, the first episode debunks a popular fan theory that claims that Sonic's world and Earth are two separate planets, and the fourth episode confirmed the existence of a multiverse in the series, as well as establishing that "Classic Sonic" and "Modern Sonic" are not separate entities from alternate dimensions, instead being the same character's past and future variants. The sixth episode also sees Tails mention Jewel the Beetle and the Restoration, two prominent parts of IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, further connecting it to the game series canon.

In 2023, the YouTuber Markiplier collaborated with Lilith Games to appear as a collectible hero in Dislyte. In-game, he is a space engineer and temporary member of the Esper Union, having supposedly traveled to Dislyte's world through space and possibly time. While Dislyte released a CGI trailer for the collaboration, Markiplier also made his own video to advertise it titled "I Was Abducted...", where he talks directly to the viewers about how he was "abducted" into the world of Dislyte and his experiences there, seemingly losing his sanity over the course of the skit, until it eventually cuts to him advertising the game normally and remarking how he is both in the game and real-life at the same time.

In October 2023, the narrative consulting firm Sweet Baby Inc. began receiving negative attention from websites like the forum Kiwi Farms for its mission statement and aggressive manner of "diversifying and enriching the video games industry", where one user described their work on Alan Wake II (AWII) as "possibly one of the biggest scandals in gaming history". This came to a head in January 2024, when a Steam Curator created a list of known games they worked on, citing Sweet Baby's own resume on their website and in-game credits to qualify for the list. While the curator initially expressed that it was not intended to try and "kill" Sweet Baby "or even convince people to not buy any game that they've worked on", it gradually built up a conservative userbase encouraging players to avoid said games due to the studio promoting a "woke agenda".

This group received increased attention the next month after two Sweet Baby employees, Chris Kindred and Maya Felix Kramer, complained about the list on Twitter, with Kindred asking users to "report the fuck out of this group" for allegedly violating Steam's Online Conduct for discussion, while Kramer questioned why the list was up at all, claiming "any game at all" could be added. However, the list had aforesaid criteria, and Steam does not have rules restricting how users curate lists or write review blurbs since they are user-made and intended to inform and cater to specific topics/audiences, with Steam's site stating that curators have no obligation to add games sent to them by developers, or to play/review games for them to be on a list to begin with. What then happened was an example of the Streisand effect, where several users instead reported Kindred for violating Twitter's terms of service for encouraging targeted harassment, leading to their account being limited for one week, and the increased attention causing more users to follow the list. The matter was also exacerbated after it was noted that Kramer was previously associated with Zoë Quinn, a developer who was a prominent figure in the 2014 #Gamergate movement, where they were accused of performing a DDoS attack on the site of startup charity organizer The Fine Young Capitalists, based on tweets they made allegedly claiming responsibility. The list gained over 210,000 followers in under a month, and a related Discord server gained almost 2,000 members. After multiple reports, Steam Support while in talks with the curator decided to keep the list up, but its forums were mostly purged and locked as of March 2024. The curator later decided to start a separate website to expand the list.

Mainstream gaming outlets reported the controversy surrounding Sweet Baby as "conservative conspiracy theories", with several noting that users blamed them for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's (SS:KtJL) mixed reception rather than developer Rocksteady, and accused them of forcing Remedy Entertainment to change AWII/Quantum Break character Saga Anderson from white to black. These claims stem from Sweet Baby having a section in the credits of SS:KtJL featuring 13 credited writers implying a sizeable influence over the story, and a November 2023 article by Game Developer revealing that Sweet Baby story and narrative consultant Kim Belair worked with Remedy on AWII "to refine the character voice and story arc" of Saga. Her actress Melanie Liburd also "offered suggestions and other insights". AWII creative director Sam Lake commented on Saga being Remedy's first black protagonist and having Nordic origins, saying that while "she isn't necessarily that connected with it, there are aspects for us developing this game from Finland that are kind of close to home [...] these different aspects coming together to form a very unique and fresh character in that sense" was a big part of her creation. Game director Kyle Rowley also commented:

"I think that it took us a long time to find Saga. It was an interesting process, we had an idea in our head on what that character could be, but then, as the character evolves over time, being open to changing her based on input from the actors and from external sources really opened things up for us. I think that’s important for us as a studio to be okay with, because we don’t do it very often for our characters, this idea of how to create a new hero character, so it is kind of a big moment for us, and it was definitely interesting for me going through that process."

Rowley denied that Sweet Baby was directly responsible for Saga's race-swap, claiming "It's absolutely not true."

Stacey Henley of TheGamer claimed in defense of Sweet Baby that "all these firms do is make suggestions" and that developers can reject suggestions they do not like, claiming that Sweet Baby was being used as a scapegoat to complain about diversity in video games and "When you resort so quickly to falsehoods, your anger is probably misplaced and unfounded."

When Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 first released in Japan, fake leaks were posted on various websites claiming to be ROMs of the game, but in reality contained an FMV of a parody of the theme song to the Disney Channel series Cory in the House. The parody featured several of the games' characters and other memes at the time superimposed over the actors' heads, including talk show host Stephen Colbert, a caricature of the Pokémon fan website Serebii.net with a Trollface superimposed over it, and legacy Pokémon character Gary Oak. Before the title card of the show appears at the end, a barely visible screenshot of a post from the imageboard 4chan can be seen featuring the box art of the Nintendo DS game adaptation of the show, implying that the parody and fake ROMs originated from there. The video also features several scrolling text statements including:

• "Amber killed Gary" - supposedly referring to an incident on 4chan's dedicated Pokémon board /vp/ starting on August 26, 2010 where several posters using Gary Oak and Mewtwo as avatars tried to "revive" or "kill" the anime-only character Amber from The Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin by trying to predict their post numbers in advance.
• "SHE IS BLACK ?!?" - referring to Pokémon Black & White Gym Leader Lenora.
• "GIANT HAIR EVERYWHERE" - on the following shot with four Bouffalants superimposed over Mount Rushmore.
• "FINAL GYM LEADER (IT HAS BEEN SEREBII CONFIRMED)" - referring to Iris, the last Gym Leader in Pokémon White and seems to be referring to leaks from the first Pokémon Black and Pokémon White games.
• "THIS FLOATING TEXT IS UP IN YO' SCREEN DAWG"
• "AMERICA" - on a shot of Stephen Colbert.

An upload of the fake ROM's FMV on YouTube dates back to September 16, 2010, two days before Pokemon Black & White's release date in Japan, and features several comments mentioning 4chan and /vp/ on top of the references in the video, suggesting that the hoax actually dates back to the release of the first Pokémon Black and Pokémon White, although discussion of this FMV from that time does not appear to have been preserved. Shortly after the game's release, a screenshot started circulating online depicting the Seagallop ferryman in Vermilion City telling the player: "By the way: if you like this game, buy it or die." Those who posted the screenshot claimed that it was a hidden message which was only triggered if the game detected that it was running a pirated copy. This claim appeared to be further corroborated by people claiming that they had encountered the message themselves when playing the game with unofficial Game Boy Advance emulators or when hacking legitimate cartridges with cheat devices, and attracted further popularity after being disseminated by various gaming YouTubers.

However, while the screenshot was not photoshopped, the claim that it was an anti-piracy measure was not true. Rather, the text was added into the game's code by an anonymous individual who distributed a ROM of it online; the claim that it was an anti-piracy feature was most likely used by the individual to circumvent ROM distribution sites' restrictions on modified games. This explains why anecdotal reports of encountering the text were so much higher than what would be expected from a complete hoax, as well as why the text is absent when examining an unaltered ROM of the game in a hex editor.

During Palworld's development, Pocket Pair hired over forty additional employees on a budget of one billion yen. Some of the staff hired notably came about under varied circumstances. For example, the character animator (despite having no prior industry experience) was hired by Takuro Mizobe after seeing his works on YouTube, where he posted combat animation videos and fan content based on the game Girls' Frontline as a hobbyist animator. Likewise, the director applied for the role during a Twitter recruitment run despite already lining up for a position at NetEase at the time. Finally, the main character designer for the game's Pals was initially rejected during a separate recruitment drive dedicated to finding illustrators that occurred in October 2020, but was ultimately hired after reapplying in February 2021.

Felix the Cat, the new playable character announced alongside the Kickstarter campaign for the game's story mode DLC RULE of Inverse Ninjas, was decided through a Twitter poll. The other three characters on the poll were The Continental Op (a private investigator character created by Dashiell Hammett in 1923 whose copyright expired in 2019), Gnorm Gnat (an insect character created by Jim Davis prior to Garfield who entered the public domain as a result of his original comics not having a copyright notice), and Tarcis the Lover (a joke slot seemingly originating from a dating simulator made by this game's co-developer Trainwreck Studios, and that voting for was actively discouraged by the developers).

Yum Yum Cookstar appears to have been made as some kind of contingency over Cooking Mama: Cookstar's infamous legal disputes, being made by the same developers and publishers and having gone on sale on Steam a mere week before Cooking Mama: Cookstar was withdrawn from sale. While it is not known to what extent Yum Yum Cookstar is based on Cooking Mama: Cookstar, it does have a substantial difference in gameplay, having a psuedo-rhythm element that does not exist in the latter game.

Some prints of the box art have a printed sticker noting the game's connection to Cooking Mama: Cookstar, in spite of the controversy. The official website, TikTok account, and trailers for Yum Yum Cookstar proclaim the game to be made by "the creators of the best-selling hitgame[sic] Cookstar" (without acknowledging the Cooking Mama series by name) and use the slogan "This ain't your mama's kitchen!". The veracity of the claim of the first Cookstar being a best-seller is not known as sales figures have not been released.
