1
Blobert's design was influenced by Gloop and Gleep from The Herculoids.
Donkey Kong 3
1
Attachment Brand new sprites of Junior can be found in the game's data, suggesting he was supposed to appear in the game.
Mario Kart 8
1
Instead of using the antigravity mechanic in Mario Kart 8, the team originally planned to have drills on the karts so players could travel through the earth.

"In "7" we had the glider, and submersion in water, and so when we were also thinking about new ideas for "8," and we thought, "well, since we did all that, why not put a drill on the karts, and have them go through the earth somehow, subterranean racing." But, we kind of thought that's not such an interesting idea, and after that we hit upon the antigravity mechanic." - Hideki Konno
Franchise: Animal Crossing
1
Attachment Kapp'n is not actually a turtle like the English translations pass him off as. He is based off a kappa. This is because his original purpose was to boat people to the island, and kappas are associated with water.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
1
Attachment In the game, Kapp'n sometimes talks about cucumbers. This is because Kapp'n is a Kappa from Japanese folklore. Kappas are seen as very mischievous creatures, but if you give them a cucumber, they are said to leave you alone.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
1
At its early concepts Biohazard 3: Last Escape was going to have a mode where you could play as a zombified Brad Vickers (cut due to production costs) and Jill would have crossed paths with Leon, Ada and William during the story (cut due to continuity problems).
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
1
Resident Evil 3 was originally planned to star the masked mercenary, HUNK, in a luxury cruiser trying to locate a G-virus sample. During this point, the eventual game was a separate project titled "Biohazard: Gaiden", not to be confused with the GBC title "Resident Evil Gaiden", and designed as a spin-off. Due to an issue with the original project's development time, this "Gaiden" was changed into the actual sequel and given the name "Biohazard 3: Last Escape" while the other project was scrapped.

subdirectory_arrow_right Super Mario Galaxy (Game)
1
Attachment Star Bits from Super Mario Galaxy and Gratitude Crystals from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword are based on candy. The candy is called Konpeitō and is popular in Japan.
Franchise: Mega Man
1
According to Keiji Inafune, the decision to make Mega Man blue was based on the fact that, out of the 56 colors that the NES color palette has, blue has the most variety. This helped show off his moves as they could be more detailed.
Luigi's Mansion
1
Attachment There's an unused model of Mario in the game's data. Mario is stretched to Luigi's proportions and is equipped with the back straps for the Poltergust 3000. The geometry of the model is simpler than Mario's final in-game model, containing fewer polygons. Although its true purpose is unknown, it could've been from an unused multiplayer mechanic requiring both Mario and Luigi. The model was stretched out, presumably to fit Luigi's skeleton so that Luigi's animations could be used on the model. The model also uses Luigi's gloves, presumably to make his animations handling the Poltergust 3000 more accurate.
Donkey Kong Country
1
Attachment The Kremlings in Donkey Kong Country were originally created for another game in development at the time, but Rareware repurposed them for DKC and they seemed to fit perfectly.

1
Attachment The game's region (Kalos) is based on France.
Franchise: Animal Crossing
1
Attachment Tom Nook is not actually a raccoon. Rather, he is a tanuki (raccoon dog). He was made this way because tanukis loosely represent money and financial success in Japanese mythology.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
1
Attachment In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, there is a tapir named Luna who runs the Dream Suite, where characters go to dream about another's town. She is a tapir because tapirs relate to dreams in Japanese mythology.
Kingdom Hearts
1
Whenever Sora wins a round in the Olympus Colosseum, he performs a small victory pose. These animations are based off of Cloud's victory poses in Final Fantasy 7, and Squall's from Final Fantasy 8.
Guitar Hero II
1
In the demo version of Guitar Hero II, the cover song for You Really Got Me includes the lyric where the singer says "Oh no no!" right before the guitar solo. For the retail version of Guitar Hero II, the "Oh no no!" was removed.
Silent Hill 4: The Room
2
Attachment This is one of the few Silent Hill games to not include a UFO ending. A Channeling Stone can be found in the game's data, suggesting that a UFO ending was planned but was later dropped.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
1
According to a pitch book that Climax Studios gave away, the original name for the game was "Silent Hill: Cold Heart" and it was going to have a female main character.
Pokémon X
subdirectory_arrow_right Pokémon Y (Game)
1
Attachment The reason Fairy type Pokemon were introduced was to balance out the game. Fairy type has an advantage over Dragon type, which was considered an overpowered type by Game Freak.
Franchise: Pokémon
1
