The game was originally announced with the title "Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem".

The game's director, Kaori Ando, originally envisioned for a crossover between Fire Emblem and Pokémon as he felt that the two series' RPG mechanics were well in line. However, the Pokémon Group already had a proposal at the time for another crossover which would become Pokemon Conquest, so the idea was not used.
