Among the files included in the Gigaleak, a large-scale leak of internal server data from Nintendo in 2020, is a build for a Hello Kitty-themed version of the Game Boy Camera. This version features numerous differences compared to the standard version of the peripheral. In addition to reskinning assets to include various Sanrio characters, the Hello Kitty version also features more extensive overhauls such as a total reworking of the menu (namely to make previously hidden features overtly visible to the player) and various new modes and minigames.

The Hello Kitty Game Boy Camera appeared to have been scrapped fairly late into its development. In addition to how fleshed out it is even when compared with the simpler released The Legend of Zelda edition, the Nintendo 64DD features a unique header for it, POCKETCAMERA_SN, in code designed to check if a Game Boy Camera is plugged in. Additionally, although the device was shelved, at least two songs from it were reused in the Mobile Trainer, a Japan-only peripheral which allowed online multiplayer on select Game Boy Color games via a cell phone connection.
