In the North American Version of the game, Emiya Alter's skin tone is lighter than in the Japanese Servers. This was done out of concern players would associate him with any racist stereotypes, but was also met with criticism that the change went against his backstory, in which his grayish black skin color (as well as changed hairstyle and eye colors) was the result of rebound effects from overuse of projection magecraft, burning his skin and distinguishing him from the original Emiya whose skin was already naturally tanned.
According to Takaya Imamura in a 2011 Nintendo Dream magazine interview, planet Papetoon, the homeworld of Fox McCloud as well as his father James and also Peppy Hare, actually exists outside of the Lylat System, approximately 10,000 light years away from it and Corneria. Imamura even states that the characters have to use warps to come and go.
This was alluded to in "The Curse of Pigma" ending in Star Fox Command, where Falco says:
FALCO: Papetoon, eh? Yeah, that's pretty much the edge of everything right there.
For comparison's sake, in the Japanese script, he says:
FALCO: はあ?パペトゥーン? ずいぶん遠いな… (Huh? Papetoon? That's a long way...)
In 2022, Logan McPherson, the director of the animated series Sonic Prime, stated that the show is canon to the games, drawing upon their existing mythology. Ian Flynn would further support this claim, revealing that he knew when exactly in the series timeline the show took place in, but would not reveal it until after the show ends, while noting that something happens in the show to make it clear that it is indeed canon to the games. In 2024, after the release of Sonic Prime's third and final season, Ian Flynn finally confirmed the show's status in the overall Sonic timeline: aside from taking place sometime after the events of Sonic Advance 3, the show's placement is considered moot due to the ending Spoiler:having the show wipe itself out. In response to complaints regarding this outcome, Flynn claimed that its placement in the canon was intentionally vague, and the show being canon to the games at all was not his decision due to only being involved in the animated series as a consultant.
This makes Sonic Prime the first television series based on the Sonic franchise to be considered canon to the mainline series.
The O-Town Highway track in Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix composites elements of the 1993 Rocko's Modern Life series and the 2019 Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling movie. This track features the original fat Chokey Chicken logo instead of the skinny chicken logo introduced in Static Cling and has Rocko's house lack the Conglom-O rocket impaling it or the damage it received while in space, but also features the Buzzbucks coffee shop, Clonglom-O Dome, and a billboard for the Schlam-O Radioactive Power Drink, all of which were established while Rocko was away in space.
Although King K. Rool's motivation for stealing Donkey Kong's banana hoard has never been officially confirmed, two theories have been brought up by former Rare employee Leigh Loveday: either K. Rool steals them because he likes bananas, or he wants Donkey Kong to starve to death so that K. Rool can occupy his treehouse.
The former theory is backed up by the instruction manual for Donkey Kong Country stating that the Kremlings steal the bananas for their rich nutritional value in potassium and Vitamin A, and by artwork drawn by Steve Mayles on Playtonic Games's Twitter page, which shows K. Rool sitting next to Gruntilda from Banjo-Kazooie on a pile of bananas while reading a book titled "101 Banana Recipes."
The latter theory is only supported by the game DK: Jungle Climber where K. Rool mentions how much he despises bananas.
The appearance of Longclaw in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog films is reminiscent of the tiles that resemble an owl's head in the Labyrinth Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. In fact, the first film's opening scene features the tile design engraved on a rock as an Easter egg, further hinting at the connection.
In the 2023 film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", Mario and Luigi's family are prominently featured. This includes:
• Their Father, voiced by Charles Martinet (and bears a resemblance to Talon from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) • Their Mother, who previously appeared in "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" and is voiced here by Jessica DiCicco • Uncle Arthur, voiced by John DiMaggio • Uncle Tony, voiced by Rino Romano (and was coincidentally mentioned in live-action segment "Glasnuts" from the TV series "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!") • Aunt Marie, who's presumably married to Uncle Arthur • An unnamed niece, who's most likely Marie and Arthur's daughter, being a first cousin once removed that's referred to as a "(second) niece" • An unnamed grandfather, who's implied by the co-director Aaron Horvath to previously have been a boxer and wears an outfit similar to Luigi in the 1983 commercial for the Atari ports of Mario Bros.
Interestingly, all of the credited voice actors for the family are all of Italian descent to stay true to the family's Italian heritage.
According to Shigeru Miyamoto, the design of the family were based on character design sheets that former Nintendo illustrator Yoichi Kotabe drew decades before the film began production.
An early concept for Crash Bandicoot, back when he was originally known as Willy the Wombat, was to have the Cortex Vortex be a surplus of television sets used to brainwash the evolved animals into doing the bidding of Dr. Cortex. After being subjected to the Vortex's media barrage for 7 days and nights, Willy would've been given a tendency to speak and act in a series of bizarre nonsequiters that referenced classic literature, pop culture, or from radio, TV or movies. Some examples would've included "Loose lips, sink ships!", "But brushing with Best Toothpaste gives white, white, white teeth!", and "Don't fire boys, until you see the whites of their eyes!" His demeanor was similar to other hyperactive pop-culture referencing comedy characters from the late 80s and 90s, where he could be quoting from Rambo one moment before switching to Fred Astaire, to John Wayne, and then to Fred Flintstone.
The game's instruction manual features an extensive backstory for Gex, who lived in Maui with his mother and siblings, whilst his father was working at NASA. Due to an incident involving a band-aid floating in a fuel tank, Gex's father was killed, causing Gex to become a shut-in, sitting and watching TV all day.
After moving to California and his mother selling the TV away, Gex runs away from home and sleeps in the garage of a local punk he befriends. At his deteriorated state, Gex imagines an invisible friend known as "The Mayor." With another death in the family, this time being Gex's Uncle Charlie who was the original model for the Izod shirt logo, this leaves Gex's family with an inherited fortune of 20 billion dollars.
With his share of the money, Gex leaves his family behind, returns to Maui, and purchases a mansion with the largest TV set in the world and enough food to last him for decades, so that he'll never have to leave the television again.
A promotional e-mail from Conker the Squirrel in 2004 to promote the release of Conker: Live & Reloaded has him talking about his career. When talking about his first appearance in 1997’s Diddy Kong Racing, he states:
"Things were different back then, you know, I was different - it goes without saying that you wouldn't catch me hanging out with any of those freaks these days. Last I heard at least one of 'em was in jail, anyway."
On May 18, 2012, a Q&A on the Rare Mini-Scribes answered a question about what their beloved characters do when their not in a new game, to which they responded "Where do the characters go between games? Well, they’re all off having crazy adventures too expensive and asset-heavy to adapt into game form … Except for Bumper the badger, who’s in jail."
On October 6, 2021, Rare's official Twitter account provided another update in response to this piece of trivia being headlined on the Super Mario Wiki, stating that Bumper is currently on parole and is "superficially sorry for all those bad things he did."
According to page 89 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, a savings deposit slip states that Conker lives at 12 Oak Tree Lane #4, 60329-1677.
According to page 74 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker refers to Rodent as "Private Milquetoast". Whether this is Rodent's actual surname or not, Milquetoast is slang for a meek or timid person, which describes Rodent’s personality.
On page 32 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker states "I am sooo scared. I just want to say to Berri’s mum…I'm sooo sorry. This was all my idea. This was my project." This is a reference to the 1999 film "The Blair Witch Project".
Also on this page is Conker's last will and testament, which includes giving his collection of Gor books (referencing the novels by John Norman), novelty pint glasses and "squirrely mags" to his friends at the Cock and Plucker. The rest of Conker's possessions are left to Berri, unless she takes up with another weasel.
According to page 28 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker has owned his water wings (which he used up until taking confidence pills in order to swim in the Sloprano chapter of the game) since a hot tub party that Berri had once.
According to page 17 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker's tab at the Cock & Plucker pub in the opening cutscene has the following information:
• The Cock and Plucker is addressed at 200 Squirrel Tail Road. • The tab is dated for March 5, 2001. This is the original release date for the game. • Conker's tab includes 3 Draft Beers, 20 Tequila Shots, 6 Gin & Tonic (with Water crossed out), 5 Whiskey Sours, and 2 Double Scotch, totaling to an amount of $173.
According to page 16 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker's Wanted poster has the following information: • Conker is 145 centimeters tall • The Panther King lives at One Spooky Canyon Blvd. Windy • Conker's bounty is $1000
The $1000 bounty is in reference to having the pay the toll to the Weasel Guards in order to progress to Uga Buga, the sixth chapter of the game. Conker’s mention of the locals not being familiar with zoology also references Conker passing off as an elephant and not a squirrel to the Weasel Guards.
According to page 15 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, the concept of the Panther King being a mythical story apparently comes from a fictitious book called "The Little Book of Fairy Panther King Tales" by Mattias Fisherias.
According to page 15 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker’s military dog tag identifies his rank as Private and the serial number as #842-D-899221-89E. However, in the game he wears a helmet that has two chevrons on it resembling the Corporal rank in the U.S. Army.
According to page 14 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker states that although things didn't work out between him and Jugga, she apparently gave her loincloth to him, which he uses as a sleeping bag.
According to page 7 of the official Nintendo Power Player's Guide, Conker mentions that Banjo's stuffed head was bought by the owner of the tavern from "some witch". Not only does this reference Gruntilda from the Banjo-Kazooie series, but it also could be referencing the fact that Chris Seavor, the voice of Conker, is also the voice of Gruntilda.
