While all versions share the same name, every one is it's own game with it's own unique mechanics. All four also had their own unique developers. The Super Nintendo version is a 2-D side scrolling action game with two lanes, akin to the two lane system in the early Fatal Fury series. The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version is a 2-D side-scrolling beat-'em up. The Game Boy Version is a side scrolling action game, and is most similar to the SNES version, but with a single lane. The Game Gear Version is a competitive fighting game.

In the Japanese version of the game after Mega Man beats Dr. Wily and Spoiler:Wily says that robots cannot harm humans, Mega Man answers with "....." (which suggests that Mega Man is programmed with Asimov's Rules of Robotics). In the American version of the game, Mega Man says "I am more than a robot!! Die Wily!!" implying that Mega Man fully intended to kill Dr. Wily and break the Laws.

Attachment A hidden Easter egg in the game is accessible by going to the status screen and holding down and left on controller 2, and pressing right and select on controller 1. This will bring up a screen with two mugshots and Hiragana text under each that says "Kunio" and "Riki," as Double Dragon theme plays. This is only available in the US version of the game. The cheat can be executed on the European version as well, but the mugshots and texts will be replaced with pieces of the title screen, as the assets were overwritten in localization.

It's possible for Tails to drown in the Hero Chao garden. If he stands in the deep water for 20 seconds or so, a countdown will begin and he will start to drown. This does not deplete the player's lives, and only works with Tails. This does not work in the GameCube installment as the water is not as deep.

Attachment In the first Japanese release for the Dreamcast, a mechanical cowgirl billboard could be seen within Casinopolis. It would moan whenever the player touched it and was removed in international copies of the game for obvious reasons. The game is actually simply a modified reskin of the Japanese-only release "Puyo Puyo". The first training levels of Puyo Puyo were removed from the game, but they can be put back in through hacking. If this is done, the Puyo Puyo characters Skeleton T., Nasu Grave, and Mummy are replaced by a character that has the intro of Coconuts with the mugshot of Scratch.

Attachment On the early releases of the game, Sonia appears on a playing card representing the Queen of Diamonds which can be spotted on the ground of the race track, Roulette Road. Sonia's head was taken from a piece of fan art from Deviantart drawn by a user formerly known as Lightning_duchess (now RianaLD). Steve Lycett, Game director commented on the cameo by saying; "We take these things seriously at Sumo and will be contacting the original artist directly to offer our sincere apologies to her, this was entirely unintentional. Not much else I can really add!" This image was only supposed to be used as a place holder.
