Collection: ToeJam & Earl
1
Rumours circulated that ToeJam & Earl were originally named FlowJam and Whirl. The story goes that when designer Greg Johnson told programmer Mark Voorsanger their names, Mark misunderstood what Greg was saying and coded them in the game as Toejam and Earl. It wasn't until they showed the game to SEGA that Greg realized the named were incorrect, but since SEGA actually like the name, they decided to keep them.

This rumour was confirmed as being false by Greg Johnson, who frequently joked with games press, giving them intentionally incorrect information, and was reaffirmed by the official ToeJam & Earl Twitter account in 2020.

Franchise: Pokémon

When Paras evolves into Parasect, it's actually being engulfed by the fungi growing on its back. It takes over the Pokemon's body and does all the thinking. This essentially leave the Pokemon zombified and lifeless, as illustrated by its lack of pupils.

Assassin's Creed II
1
There's a mission in which you have to deliver a letter to a farmer. Upon reading the letter, you learn that the farmer is charged with attacking neighbors with swords. Additionally, it states the farmer has "committed crimes against God and nature" and says "if you are not aware of the charges against you, read Leviticus 18:23." Leviticus 18:23 is a verse of the Bible about the wrongs of sexual intercourse with animals.

Rock Band
1
After the South Park episode "Whale Whores" included a segment where the characters played Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" on Rock Band (which was not in the game), Harmonix released the song as DLC, as well as a special cover version of the song performed by Eric Cartman.
Final Fantasy VIII
2
In the 2004 Summer Olympics, the United States synchronized swimming team of Alison Bartosik and Anna Kozlova performed to the songs "Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec" and "Liberi Fatali" from the Final Fantasy 8 soundtrack. Their performance won them the bronze medal.
Grand Theft Auto IV
1
Grand Theft Auto IV previously held the record for being the most expensive game to develop, coming in at $100 million. The record was previously held by Shenmue, at $47 million, and is now owned by Grand Theft Auto V
Shenmue
1
Shenmue began development on the SEGA Saturn, and was later reworked for the SEGA Dreamcast. The lengthy development process is one reason the game cost $47 million to make. It was previously thought to cost $70 million, but that was said to be an exaggeration. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive development process in history. The current record belongs to Grand Theft Auto IV, costing around $100 million to develop.
Deus Ex
1
Deus Ex was released on June 26 2000 and is set in the year 2052. It has sections of the game where New York's skyline is visible, and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center are missing.

The Twin Towers exist in the game's data files, but were simply left out by mistake.

During development, the game's developers justified the lack of the towers by stating terrorists had destroyed the World Trade Center earlier in the game's storyline. This was over a year prior to the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.
SimCopter
2
Attachment In Maxis' 1996 SimCopter, there is an easter egg that causes half naked men to crowd around the player's helicopter and make out during certain days of the year. Upon learning of the easter egg, Maxis fired the coder, Jacques Servin, for inserting "subversive content" into the games' code. Thousands of copies of the game were recalled from store shelves and the easter egg was removed from later versions of the game.
EarthBound
1
The main antagonist of EarthBound, an alien known as "Giygas", was made by Shigesato Itoi and described as "a living being that deserves love." While the character first debuted with a different design as the final boss of Mother, Giygas' appearance in EarthBound was inspired by a childhood incident where Itoi accidentally walked into the wrong movie at a theatre and watched the 1957 Japanese horror film "Kenpei to Barabara Shibijin". Itoi was traumatized by the film, where he confused a lovemaking scene that ends in murder as a rape scene. He says it had a "sense of terror having atrocity and eroticism side-by-side, and that's what Giygas's lines at the end are":

Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness Ness, Ness...
I...feel..g..o..o..d...
It hurts... It hurts...
I'm so sad, Ness...
Friends...
You cannot grasp the true form of Giygas' attack!
Go b..a..c..k
I am...H...a...p...p...y...
It's not right, not right...
Ness!

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
1
Attachment Spider-Man 2 was recalled to rework anything related to the World Trade Center. Activision and Vicarious Visions feared backlash from releasing a New York-centric game featuring the Twin Towers so close to the attacks. This included renaming a level, changing dialogue, and heavily editing entire structures at key points in the game.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The Announcer (who also voices crazy hand and master hand) is Pat Cashman, who was the announcer for "Bill Nye, The Science Guy". He even acted in some scenes in the show.

SEGA was the second company (after Nintendo) to be in negotiation with Sony to make a new console, but the idea was eventually rejected by SEGA. It was confirmed by Tom Kalinske (an employee of SEGA) that the console specs SEGA had proposed were used for the PlayStation. It was also the technical achievements of SEGA's "Virtua Fighter" that made Sony focus on 3D rather than 2D. SEGA essentially sealed their own fate in the console market by rejecting the plans and inspiring Sony to focus on 3D.
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
1
Attachment In the English version of Lunar 2, there's an Easter egg in place of a glitch seen in the Japanese version. In the first boss fight, if Hiro and Gwyn die at a point that prevents the boss from reaching Lucia, the fight will never end, as the boss cannot kill the last party member. If the same conditions are met in the English version, a cute and tiny character called Ruby that mostly just flies around in the background , will one hit kill the boss.
Halo: Combat Evolved
1
During Halo's first European press tour, the demo computer blew up into smoke. Joe Staten, lead writer and cinematics director, remembered it well:

"Having no computer made our first demo go, er, poorly. 'Imagine if you will, there's this green guy called Master Chief, and he's fighting against some purple space aliens called the Covenant.' Cool, huh?"

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
1
If the player names their character "ZELDA" in all capital letters ("LOLO" in the French release; "ぜるだ" in the Japanese release) they are treated to a salsa remix of the game's main theme. This could also be a nod to the original The Legend of Zelda on the NES, where entering the name "ZELDA" on the second save slot results in the game starting on the second quest immediately.
