On the series official site, Benimaru Nikaido has been said to be loosely based off a comic book character and that to this day, the staff still call him by the character's name. A developer interview first seen in the "All About KOF '94" mook eventually confirmed that the character is based off Jean Pierre Polnareff from the third arc of the long-running manga series "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure":

Benimaru Nikaido Benimaru was modelled after Jean Pierre Polnareff from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure... as such, for a long while the developers called him by that name instead of Benimaru. His design went through a lot of changes and experimentation too. For example, at one point he wore a tank top t-shirt. Also, in his win pose he says “san kyuu!” (thank you) in that funny voice. When Benimaru’s designer first heard that voice, it was so far from his original image of the character that he got enraged and couldn’t do any work for the rest of the day. Which leads us to a question we often get asked: is Benimaru gay? My answer is, he’s a man’s man. He loves women, if I had to say. Maybe he’s a little narcissistic as well?

Within Route 218, inside one of the hallway type buildings, there is a guard who will tell you how thirsty he is. However, bringing him a drink of any kind won't do anything.

This is a reference to the original games, Red/Blue/Green/Yellow, in which the player must bring the guards a drink to enter Saffron City.

Attachment Early on in Level 5 "Barons Hed: The Fallen City", if you scare the villagers in Barons Hed, they will run away, and you can follow one fleeing woman who will open the locked door of a house near a bridge. If you can get inside the house fast enough, Max from Sam & Max, a franchise whose first game Sam & Max Hit the Road was developed and published by LucasArts, can be found inside sitting in a chair wielding a modified Bryar pistol (which is ironic since the Bryar pistol is already a modified Bryar rifle) that shoots highly-damaging green bolts instead of red. Max also has a high amount of health similar to that of a Dark Jedi.

Max does not play a death animation when killed. Instead, he just plays the same idle animation when he is first found, but takes on the attributes of a corpse, such as lack of collision. However if he is activated like a switch or door, he will get out of the chair and approach the room's door to exit, waiting for you to open it for him. Upon doing so, he will then wander the level, killing enemies and villagers alike. After Max has been let outside, the player can activate him again, letting them see from his view. A HUD message is also displayed reading, "It's MaxVision™!" If he is attacked by the player, he will return fire. If the player pushes Max outside instead of activating him, and attacks him, he will not fire back. If he is killed after being activated, he will freeze standing instead of playing any animation, but still becomes a corpse.

Max makes a second cameo appearance in Level 9 "Fuel Station Launch". During the final jump at the end of the level, you need to quickly snap back the mouse just before you land so you are facing backwards, which will allow you to see Max's face plastered three times on the front of the platform you just jumped off.

Attachment It is possible to play as the Naboo Starfighter from "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" by entering the password "HALIFAX?", followed by "!YNGWIE!" (ignoring the incorrect password entry sound). The game came out six months before "The Phantom Menace" was released, so the code was kept a secret from consumers and even members of the development team. It was only after the release of the movie that the cheat's existence was made public.

The second part of the code "!YNGWIE!" was taken from musician Yngwie Malmsteen.

Also worth noting, the dog will find a dig spot over the grave, and will find a toy sword. Another tombstone features the quote "Here lies Arnold. He will not be back." which is a reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Herobrine Removed" has been added to a number changelogs. Herobrine is a character from a Minecraft "creepypasta" who looks exactly like the player, but has white eyes. It is said that Herobrine is Notch's dead brother, although Notch said himself that he does not have a dead brother. Herobrine never appeared in the game, and it's likely that this line being added to the changelogs is just a joke with the community.
