Charmander may be based on a 1000+ year old misconception about the salamander.

Both Aristotle and Pliny the Elder believed that the salamander was capable of withstanding the heat of flames, and even had the ability to extinguish them. In Pliny's Natural History, the oldest surviving encyclopedia, a fairly accurate description of the salamander is followed up by claims that "This animal is so intensely cold as to extinguish fire by its contact, in the same way as ice does" (Book 10, Chapter 86). Later in the same work, though, he seems to view these supposed properties with more skepticism, claiming that "if it had been true, it would have been made trial of at Rome long before this" (Book 29, Chapter 23).

The connection between salamanders and fire persisted, however, and we can also find it in the Talmud, which briefly mentions the salamander as a creature actually produced by flames, whose blood could protect anybody smeared in it from fire. Even Leonardo da Vinci, one of history's greatest scientific minds, seemed content to echo the received wisdom on the subject, mentioning in his notebooks that the salamander "has no digestive organs, and gets no food but from the fire, in which it constantly renews its scaly skin."
Metroid
1
Before being changed to Metroid, the game was going to be named Space Hunter. Also, Space Hunter was used as Samus' title instead of Bounty Hunter in the original game manual. There wasn't enough time left in development to change the occupation, so Space Hunter was left in the original Instruction Manual.

Attachment According to Hiroji Kiyotake, the Metroid's home planet, SR388, was named after a popular Yamaha SR 400 Series Motorcycle engine.

"...while it was called 400cc, you didn't have any choice but 388cc, but it was written like that for the time being, and that's how it came out!"

In an interview, Metroid character designer Hiroji Kiyotake said that the name "Metroid" came from combining the words "android" and "metro subway."

"There was one more staff member, and the two of us decided on it. We attached 'android' to the "metro subway" and that's how we got 'Metroid'."

Gears of War
1
Gears of War was originally going to be a game called 'Unreal Warfare'. It was going to be a large multiplayer game that was set within the Unreal universe and would be the next Unreal game after Epic's previous Unreal Tournament. However, the team decided to strike the game from the Unreal series because it travelled too far from the Unreal universe.
Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures
1
Attachment In early builds of the game, Guitar Guy's sprites were designed after his actor in the web series, Kyle Justin, complete with dialogue referencing his appearances as a guest reviewer. However, the final game redesigns his sprites to depict him as a skeleton, referencing a gag in the Ikari Wars review where the Nerd discovers that Guitar Guy died and decomposed behind his couch before reviving him with a cheat code from the NES game. Likewise, each of Guitar Guy's lines is replaced with an ellipsis.

In a post on the game's Steam Community page, BlackFlag, one of the developers, stated that the redesign was mutually agreed upon following discussions between Justin and the development staff.

Sol Badguy is partially based off of Freddie Mercury, former frontman for the rock band Queen. This includes his name as a nod to Mercury's nickname "Mr. Bad Guy," as well as his leitmotif in the games being called "Keep Yourself Alive," sharing its name with the first song from Queen's debut album. Sol's headband is also inscribed with the words "Rock You," a reference to Queen's song "We Will Rock You."

According to Sol's official bio, his main hobby is listening to Queen, and his favourite album is "Sheer Heart Attack." This may also tie in to his role as Daisuke Ishiwatari's alter ego, as Ishiwatari admits to being a fan of Queen.

Ragna the Bloodedge's name is derived from "Ragnarök," a Norse term commonly used to describe the end of the world. This could tie into Ragna's ability to channel the Black Beast, which nearly caused the end of the world in BlazBlue's timeline.

It may also be a reference to the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok, a man who slayed the serpent Jörmungandr. This mirrors the relationship between Ragna and series antagonist Yūki Terumi, who has a snake motif for his attacks.
