There is a white cat that appears twice during the game. The cat appears first in File 1 at the beach. If Raiden attempts to attack the cat, it will dodge the attack and can even be forced into the ocean until it's completely underwater. The cat appears later during File 3. During Monsoon's pre-battle monologue, if Raiden looks to the right the cat will appear again and one of the assassins accompanying Monsoon will pet and play with the cat.

The raffle at the beginning of the game may be a reference to the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Both lotteries are a big deal at the populated areas, and both end up with a stoning. It can also be said that in the story, the "winner" is selected by drawing from a hat, similar to the raffle in the game.

If Male Voice 3 is selected for The Protagonist during the mission "The Belgian Problem", when the ornament is dislodged The Protagonist will yell, "Familiar with Agincourt, you prick?". Then, when the decision presents itself, The Protagonist remarks "I'm sure there's a St. Crispin's Day joke in here somewhere...". Both are references to the 100 Years War between England and France, specifically the Battle Of Agincourt (which took place on St. Crispin's Day), where the English routed a numerically superior French army; Male Voice 3 is English, while Phillipe Loren is often implied to be French (despite his constant pleas that he is actually Belgian).

In the H.Q. in one of the shops, on the second floor there is a large oval painted on the wall. On the outside of the same wall you can find a second oval. Reading a note near the first oval reveals a scientist wanted to use these to travel long distances, referencing the Portal series.

The note reads:
The "door to nowhere" has proven to be a safety hazard, but for me this project is an endless source of inspiration. With the proper application of energies, I believe I can transform the door frame into a window of sorts, one that will allow a traveler to cover the distance from my workshop to some distant, arbitrary point in a single step. Currently the step leads to a sheer drop, straight down into the courtyard, but in time it will bridge gaps that will boggle the mind. Such work is many years away, to be sure, but if I survive the plague I'm sure to succeed.

At the entrance of Nipton, a man by the name of Oliver Swanick comes up to you and proclaims he won the lottery. Later, we discover that the lottery is a death sentence, and if you fail to win, you are executed. This may be a reference to a short novel "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, where the winner of the lottery was stoned. This is practically the same incident, just the prize for winning altered. It can also be said that both of the lotteries are well known around town.

Attachment In Leon's campaign, you rescue a rookie cop caught in a town filled with zombies on his first day at work. This is a throwback to how Leon was in a similar situation back in Raccoon City.
