Starfield

Upon release, many streamers criticized the game for giving the option for the player to choose their pronouns in the creation menu. Similarly, a player on Twitter criticized the game for allowing a male NPC, Sam Coe, to flirt with a male player character. In response, Elias Toufexis, the voice actor for Coe, clarified that the character was played as bisexual.

Attachment PaRappa the Rapper co-creator Rodney Greenblat has said in response to a fan email that, if he were to do a new Um Jammer Lammy game, he would have Lammy and Katy Kat as a romantic couple. A few years after this, he would begin posting annual Valentines' Day images to his Twitter accounts with Lammy and Katy together.

Notably, one of the interviews in Um Jammer Lammy Now! has Katy laugh off a question about if she has a boyfriend.

Platform: Sega Pico
1
Despite being aimed at preschool-aged children and their parents, the Sega Pico was marketed in the US in a similar edgy fashion to Sega's products for older audiences, particularly with a commercial titled "Sponge", which opens with loud rock music and features intense camera cuts, mild slapstick, and most unexpectedly, a joke where the Sega Pico is shown as a heavenly device protecting a child from a drag pageant reality show titled "Middle-Aged Men Who Want to Be Teenage Girls".

Additionally, while much tamer and inoffensive, the animated commercials featuring the Pico's mascot, Smart Alex, featured the loud and in-your-face "Sega Scream".

Attachment Matilda from Angry Birds was originally designed as an unnamed male bird, but was changed to female when higher ups at Rovio realized that male birds do not lay eggs. The Valentine's Day season of Angry Birds Seasons gave Matilda a girlfriend, which, after the change, retroactively gave the unintended implication of Matilda being a lesbian, despite actually being straight and later marrying Terence in the film series. When Matilda was redesigned for the 2013 animated webseries Angry Birds Toons, she would gain the pink cheeks of her former girlfriend. Angry Birds Seasons was removed from app stores in 2019, completing the retcon of the girlfriend character. Despite this, the Angry Birds franchise would introduce LGBTQ+ side characters and support LGBTQ+ fan works in later years.

A side quest called "The Ballad of Jari and Somr" was made as a tribute to two devs that met and fell in love while working at Santa Monica Studios, Jake Snipes and Sam Handrick. This quest involves going to The Eternal Campfire to unlock it and then searching for ingredients to prepare a meal, an homage to the couples love of making meals together. The unfortunate catalyst for this addition to the game was the death of Jake Snipes in 2020.

Attachment Garfield Labyrinth is a localized version of Mickey Mouse IV: Mahou no Labyrinth where, instead of Mickey having to save Minnie, Garfield has to rescue Odie. However, the ending cutscene of the game was not modified to account for the change from Mickey's girlfriend to Garfield's foil, resulting in the accidental implication that Garfield and Odie are in a gay relationship as they hold hands surrounded by hearts, frolic in flowers, and travel in a hot air balloon.

Peppa Pig: World Adventures
2
Peppa Pig: World Adventures' character creator allows players to make same-sex parents and families comprised of multiple animal species. Developer David Moral claimed that it would've been significantly easier during development to simply have a default player family instead of a character creator, but that it was not an option to anyone on the development team and striving for representation was "super worth it".

Attachment Scott Cawthon retired from game development in 2021 after it was discovered that he had donated thousands of dollars to anti-LGBTQ+ Republican political candidates. Cawthon posted a message to his fans on his website stating:

"I've had a blessed, fulfilling, and rich career. I've been shown great kindness and I've tried to show great kindness in return. I've tried to make some good games (let the debate ensue), and I've witnessed the creation of possibly the most creative and talented fanbase on the planet. [...] I realize that I miss a lot of things that I got to focus on before FNaF became such a success. I miss making games for my kids, I miss doing it just for fun, and I miss making RPGs even though I stink at it. All of this to say that I am retiring."

He also stated that he would be choosing someone that he trusts to take over the FNaF franchise. Cawthon later removed this message from his website, has not announced a successor for the franchise, and appears to still have complete control over it. In 2023, Cawthon released the first game since announcing his retirement, Freddy in Space 3: Chica in Space, as a supposed tie-in to the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie from that year.

When completing Arcade Mode as Bridget, one possible ending depicts her coming out as a transgender girl, having previously been depicted in earlier games as a cisgender boy who was raised as a girl. This plot development attracted rumors that it was a "bad ending" exclusive to the English localization and that Bridget was still a crossdressing boy in the Japanese release. Eventually, director Akira Katano and developer Daisuke Ishiwatari confirmed on their "Developer's Backyard" blog that Bridget was indeed intended to be a trans girl in the Japanese version and that the game's endings were not written under the pretense of them being "good" or "bad," stating that they simply showcase different, coexisting aspects of each character, indicating that Bridget's trans identity is in place across both of her Arcade Mode endings.
Celeste
2
Attachment In a November 2020 Medium article, Maddy Thorson, who served as the game's writer and director, confirmed longstanding rumors that Madeline, the protagonist of Celeste, is a transgender woman. Thorson described the game's story as allegorical for her own process of coming to terms with her gender identity, and stated that while the idea didn't initially come to her during development, she "began to form a hunch" while working on the DLC chapter "Farewell", becoming certain of Madeline's transgender status after the chapter's release. Thorson came out as transgender herself in the same article.

Thorson additionally stated that although the possibility of Madeline being trans was discussed with the rest of the development team when making "Farewell", they ultimately decided not to include any overt statements past visual allusions in the chapter's ending, stating that it would be more in-character for Madeline to keep such information private. At the same time, however, Thorson stated that had she started development of Celeste already knowing that she was trans, she would've depicted Madeline differently.
Streets of Rage 3

Attachment Ash is a mini boss that can only be encountered in Japanese versions of the game. He is a homosexual who is very stereotypical in both appearance and behavior. He prances around the stage, lets out a feminine laugh when he grabs the player and uses the female voice cry when defeated in battle. He can be unlocked as a playable character by pressing and holding the B button when he is defeated. He is the strongest out of all the characters and attacks fast.

Ash was removed from the North American and European versions of the game likely because of the obvious backlash SEGA would've received. His boss theme can still be heard but only in the BGM test screen.
Phantasy Star II
1
In the Japanese release of Phantasy Star II, the piano teacher, Ustvestia, is openly homosexual. When a male party member volunteers to be taught the Musik technique by Ustvestia, Ustvestia replies, "He looks cute." Ustvestia then proceeds to charge the male party member less for the lesson than he would charge a female party member.

However, in the English release of Phantasy Star II, Ustvestia simply says, "He looks smart." The gender-based disparity in the fee for learning Musik is left unexplained.
Pillars of Eternity

Attachment As a backer reward for the game's Kickstarter, backers had the option to provide a message to appear in-game on a memorial stone. One of the in-game memorial stones in the final version of the game had its message later changed due to it being considered by many as a hateful, transphobic joke.

A number of people were against the change, but Obsidian decided to have the messaged altered. The original message by the backer read:

"Firedorn Lightbringer
Here lies Firedorn, a hero in bed.
He once was alive, but now he's dead.
The last woman he bedded, turned out a man.
And crying in shame, off a cliff he ran.
"

After receiving numerous complaints from gamers about the quote, CEO of Obsidian, Feargus Urquhart, chose to change it and together with the backer who created it, decided on a new message.

"Here lies Firedorn, a bard, a poet
He was also a card, but most didn't know it
A poem he wrote in jest was misread
They asked for blood, so now he's just dead.

Shigesato Itoi revealed in a 2003 interview that Tony, Jeff's roommate at the Snow Wood Boarding House in Winters, is homosexual:

"Well, for example, there's a gay person in MOTHER 2. A really passionate friend who lives in an England-like place. I designed him to be a gay child. In a normal, real-life society, there are gay children, and I have many gay friends as well. So I thought it would be nice to add one in the game, too."

Attachment The gender identity of the party member Vivian is inconsistent between different language translations of the original game. In the Japanese version, Vivian identifies and presents as female, but is described by other characters in the game as actually being an effeminate-looking male, aligning with common media depictions of transgender or gender non-conforming characters at the time, but not explicitly referring to Vivian as such. A rough translation of the Japanese text for Vivian as a party member reads:

"カゲ三人組の一人だった オンナのコのようで ホントは オトコのコ"
"One of the shadow group, Vivian appears to be a girl but is really a boy."

The French version directly carries this over and additionally describes Vivian as a boy pretending to be a girl, while the Spanish version describes Vivian as a boy who looks like a girl. However, according to former Nintendo of Europe translator Pol Roca, Vivian's Spanish name "Bibiana" was intended to be a reference to the Spanish transgender actress Bibiana Fernández, who starred in the 1977 film Cambio de Sexo (or Sex Change).

The English and German versions remove any references to being transgender or gender non-conforming, implicitly portraying Vivian as a cisgender woman with "a bit of an inferiority complex". Instead of being bullied over her biological sex, her sisters instead belittle her for her appearance.

The Italian version of the game on the other hand explicitly depicts Vivian as an openly proud transgender woman, with the localization reconfiguring her relationships with gender identity and her sisters by having Marilyn and Bedlam's bullying being rooted in jealousy, traits which are absent in the Japanese script:

Vivian: "We'll defeat that Mario guy! 'Cause we are 'The three shadow sisters'!"
Marilyn: "How can you define us as 'The three shadow sisters'? You are a man! A MAN!"
Vivian: "That’s true, you are two sisters… But I am a woman too now, and I'm proud to have turned into a woman!"
Marilyn: "Hmph. And you surely think you are more beautiful than we are, huh? You deserve a punishment for that!"

The English release of the Nintendo Switch remake follows the Italian version of the original game in unambiguously describing Vivian as a transgender woman, most prominently featuring a line where Vivian states that "it took me a while to realize that I was [Marilyn and Beldam's] sister... not their brother." It's currently unknown if Vivian's portrayal in other translations of the remake has changed from the original release.

Catherine
1
Attachment In the "True Katherine" ending, Spoiler:Erica Anderson is revealed to be a transgender woman, with the credits revealing that she was originally raised under the name Eric. She is additionally referred to by her birth name in the Japanese version's manual, which lists her sex as male. This treatment of her generated controversy in the years since the game's release on whether or not it negated the positive elements of her "flawed but realistic" characterization.

Catherine: Full Body further stoked controversy both in and out of Japan regarding the character. The game's marketing highlighted a scene where Spoiler:Vincent reacts to the sight of Erica's naked body with shock, which drew criticisms of invoking a transphobic trope where men are disturbed by the sight of a transgender woman's genitals. Additionally, the game itself includes an alternate ending in which Spoiler:Catherine goes back in time and starts dating Vincent in high school, with a time-skip showing Erica pre-transition. Although the ending heavily implies that she will still transition later on, many audiences interpreted it as advocating that transgender people continue presenting as their assigned gender at birth.

Attachment If you put in the cheat code "girlnextdoor" you can play the game as Mary Jane Watson. At the end of the game, where Spider-Man and Mary Jane usually kiss, Mary Jane will kiss herself. This code was removed from later versions of the game, presumably because of the lesbian kiss in an E-rated game.
