Normally, the player is required to defeat the MERV enemies in "Welcome to Planktopolis... Minions" either with the Sonic Wave Guitar or by deflecting their missiles with the upgraded Karate Spin. However, they can also be attacked by walking directly underneath them, which deactivates their lasers and allows SpongeBob to hit them with the Bash. This typically goes unnoticed in normal gameplay, as MERVs' lasers try to repel the player if they get too close; additionally, the Mini-MERV enemies encountered earlier in "Shell City, Dead Ahead" instantly repel the player if they get even closer, meaning that there would be no opportunity to discover this alternate strategy in advance.

Probably, but "Welcome to Planktopolis... Minions" is a SpongeBob-oriented level, and the area where you can switch to Patrick heavily limits where he can and can't go. Because of this, there aren't really that many opportunities to use Throw, one of Patrick's moves, against them compared to "Shell City, Dead Ahead", which is Patrick-oriented (though allows SpongeBob to roam much more of the level when switching to him).

Pretty sure the Mervyns can also be taken out with the Pick Up & Throw Move, in addition to the two methods mentioned in the submission. That I of course meant to say as a comment.
