The game's developers describe Resident Evil Code: Veronica as the true sequel to Resident Evil 2 even if it did not have a numbered title, and despite it being released after Resident Evil 3.

Some never before seen concept art for the game was released on February 13th, 2015 about 15 years after the game's original release. Some of the more interesting concepts include Jill Valentine as the protagonist instead of Claire Redfield and the Ashford family (known as the Krueger family during this point) being Nazis.
