In October 2023, police dashcam video was released that was part of a case involving two LAPD officers who were fired after a disciplinary committee and the police board found they were incompetent in performing their duty. This review was initiated due to one serious occurrence on April 15, 2017 where the two officers were caught on the dashcam audio playing Pokémon Go and trying to catch a Snorlax instead of responding to a call for reinforcements by fellow officers during a robbery at a local Macy's. The two officers filed a countersuit claiming that the analysis of the dashcam was an invasion of privacy, but it was to no avail as the judge ruled in favor of the police board.

In 2019, Pokemon Go had a cross over event with popular manga series One Piece to support the reconstruction effort of Kumamoto, Japan after the devastating 2016 earthquake. The event was a collaboration with One Piece creator Eichiro Oda (a native to Kumamoto) that spawned Pikachu wearing straw hats, and a new special Pokestop in Kumamoto for the statue of One Piece’s main character, Monkey D. Luffy (featuring special art by Oda himself). Although the global release of this event didn’t mention One Piece by name, the announcement did make hints that referenced the pirate anime.

The game was banned in Iran by the High Council of Virtual Spaces, the official body in the country which looks over online activity, due to unspecified "security concerns".
Before deciding to ban the game, Iranian authorities were waiting to see to what extent Niantic might co-operate with them.
