In 2017, the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account posted a parody of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's character select screen, with various characters from throughout the Sonic franchise in place of the game's playable roster. This was likely meant to poke fun at Infinite's roster, which many had described as "mediocre".

According to Capcom's Senior Community & Esports Manager Matthew Edwards, Akira Kazama from Rival Schools was originally meant to be included as a playable character in the game. She didn't make the cut, however.

X's Hadouken taunt is in reference to Mega Man X, in which X obtains the Hadouken from Dr. Light dressed as Ryu from the Street Fighter series. Additionally, if X is equipped with the Armor of Light while performing the Hadouken taunt, it can cause a small amount of damage to any opponent.
