The game was accused by various groups and individuals of promoting religious warfare and bigotry, including disbarred attorney Jack Thompson, who severed ties with the original book series' publisher Tyndale House after learning of its production due to his hard stance against violence in video games. More complaints came from groups such as the Beatitudes Society, Christian Alliance for Progress, the Center for Progressive Christianity, the Tides Foundation through its short-lived initiative "Campaign to Defend the Constitution", American Atheists, and the Anti-Defamation League. The latter group, however, noted that series co-creator Tim LaHaye did not want "gratuitous" blood and gore in the game, and wanted it to be designed as "a classic battle between good [believers] and evil [non-believers]" intended to promote pacifist "positive values".
