The game started out as a Rodan game. It was shown in an "Upcoming Titles" promo that came with Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, as well as being featured in Nintendo Power and GamePro. What was changed gameplay wise and the reason for the change in name is not clear, but it is rumored that Toho felt the Rodan name wouldn't sell as well as Godzilla.
