The musical legend Chubby Checker recorded the original version of the Dig Dug commercial theme. However, this version was never used in the finished commercial for unknown reasons. The tape holding this recording was unearthed by Matt Osborne, son of former Atari vice president Don Osborne, over 30 years after the airing of the famous commercial.

Dig Dug's real name is Taizo Hori ("Horitai zo" means "I want to dig") and was once married to Masuyo "Kissy" Tobi, the main character of Baraduke. They had three children, Tayo Tobi, Ataru Hori and Susumu Hori, the latter being the main character of the Mr. Driller series.
