Originally, Boiler City was intended to have a yellow sky, more closely resembling its incarnation from Antonball Deluxe, but between the release of the Dynamite Demo and the One Blast Demo, it was changed to a green sky. Series creator Tony Grayson acknowledged this change in a YouTube video filmed while presenting the game at PAX West, parodying a viral video originally filmed in September 2018 during a large fight at a shopping center in White Marsh, Maryland. In the video, a man witnessing the fight jokingly creates a fake narrative about it being caused by the late discovery that the animated series Ed, Edd, n' Eddy ended in 2009, shortly before the incident devolved into gunshots and a stabbing that left one person injured. The timing of the gunshots in the viral video was reframed in Grayson's parody as someone unconvincingly hitting another person with a folding chair and kicking them while laughing.

According to creator Tony Grayson, possibly in a joking manner, the Anton characters are all multicoloured as a result of a nuclear war that left only Japan and their home country of the Backburner Peninsula, and are not meant to be any real-world enthicity. Grayson jokingly compared the skin colors of the Anton characters to The Groovenians, a 2002 Cartoon Network pilot that was not picked up for a series.

The choice to give each room in Antonblast its own individual name was inspired by Commodore 64 single-screen platformers, particularly the bootleg game Snoopy by Radarsoft BV.

Anton was originally supposed to be an alcoholic in Antonball Deluxe, but the publisher forced the developers to remove that element, and he would drink sodas and floats instead. Anton would be made a drunkard in Antonblast, and the plot of the new game would revolve around rescuing his collection of "spirits".

In response to fans of Antonblast and Pizza Tower attempting to start an arbitrary rivalry between the two games, Antonblast creator Tony Grayson tweeted "Why not both?" with an illustration of Anton and Peppino kissing.

Brendan O'Brien, the original voice of Crash Bandicoot from the character's inception until 2001, was in talks to do voice work for Antonblast, but unfortunately passed away in March 2023 before he could record any lines.

It is jokingly implied in a trailer for Antonblast that Anton is the father of Amy Rose from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. This is a reference to a fan art trend following the reveal of Sonic Origins, where fans would portray Anton as a friend or family member to Amy after her spinning hammer attacks were shown to have an aesthetic resemblance to Anton's hammer attacks.

The music track "Super Gangston!" in Antonball Deluxe is a highly distorted early version of "Dynamite Man" from Antonblast, which had not been officially revealed at the time of the game's launch.
