Artoon was founded by ex-Sega employees including Naoto Ohshima (the original designer of Sonic the Hedgehog), Yoji Iishi, and Yutaka Sugano in 1999. Although the developer was later absorbed by AQ Interactive in 2010, many of the same employees went on to found Arzest.
The similar makeup of these two developers is reflected in the fact that both Artoon and Arzest have developed Yoshi games for portable Nintendo hardware: Yoshi Topsy-Turvy and Yoshi's Island DS from Artoon, and Yoshi's New Island from Arzest. The latter company has also developed games for Sega, including 2023's Sonic Superstars, which marked Naoto Ohshima's return to a series he helped create.
