Since the mid-to-late 2000s, the No One Lives Forever series has been stuck in a legal quagmire with several companies that do not know who owns the rights to it. These include The Walt Disney Company (the current owners of Fox Interactive who published the first two games), Activision Blizzard (which acquired and merged with Vivendi Games, who at the time was the parent company of both Fox Interactive and the third game's publisher Sierra Entertainment), and Warner Bros. Games (who acquired series developer Monolith Productions and later closed them down in 2025). Nightdive Studios, a company that specializes in re-releasing abandonware games, expressed interest in remastering the games as early as May 2014 by acquiring the source code to the first two games, and attempting to file trademarks and work out licensing agreements with these companies. However, their attempts failed due to evidence of the ownership transitions predating computerized records, making them harder to locate. Because of this confusion, Warner Bros. stated soon after that they had no interest in licensing out the IP. While Nightdive has continued to gauge public support for the remasters as recently as March 2024, Monolith Productions' Facebook account directed fans to an abandonware upload of the games when asked about the possibility of a re-release in 2018.
