Luigi's Mansion
subdirectory_arrow_right Luigi's Mansion (Game)
1
Luigi's Mansion was originally developed with the intention of being in 3D. All Nintendo GameCube systems support display of stereoscopic 3D. Nintendo decided to shift focus away from 3D at the time as a 3D screen add-on would have cost more than the Gamecube system itself. Stereoscopic 3D would later be used in the game's Nintendo 3DS remake.

Attachment Petey Piranha, Paratroopa, and a Hammer Brother were all going to be playable in the game, as well as a third costume for Miis. The Chain Chomp item was going to return, but was replaced by the Bullet Bill in the final game. Several graphics supporting this appear within the game's data.
Franchise: Mario

Shigeru Miyamoto wanted Mario to have a dinosaur companion ever since Super Mario Bros. but it wasn't thought possible at the time due to the limitations of the NES. He wanted to implement Yoshi in Super Mario Bros. 3 but again could not. Two power-ups were created to fill the gap - raccoon and frog Mario. Co-worker Takashi Tezuka once speculated that Miyamoto's love of horse riding had influenced Yoshi's creation.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Nintendo originally planned to include a level editor in the game. The level editor is still in the game's code, and by editing the game's memory, the level editor can still be accessed.
GoldenEye 007

Attachment In the first level of the game, the Dam, there's a small island near the end which can be seen from afar. The island features a guard tower and an inoperable drone gun with some beta textures. It can only be reachable using a cheat device and a no clipping cheat enabled.

Left over code suggest the player had to travel to the island and retrieve proper equipment to perform a bungee jump. 'Piton Gun' and 'Bungee' can still be seen in the games code, and a Piton Gun is what Bond used in the movie to get to the facility. However, according to Duncan Botwood, one of the developers on the game, it was originally planned for players to investigate the area and find some armor as a reward.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Attachment There are a number of unused transformations in the ROM that never made it into the final game. These include a plane, a mushroom and a tree.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Attachment The Saturn version includes a number of extra areas and features unavailable in the PlayStation version. Most infamously being that of the Underground Garden, as the entrance is still visible in the PlayStation version, though inaccessible. The player can glitch the game into allowing access to this area, but it is unfinished and only a glitched out save point is available.
Mario Kart 64

Attachment In its early beta stage, the game was known as Super Mario Kart R. Some differences were Kamek as a playable character who would later be replaced with Donkey Kong. Also there was an option to have the multiplayer screen set to horizontally or vertically, but this was removed in the final version. A number of other small differences were the avatars in the "Character Select" screen, the textures of the "Item Boxes", the feather as an item, and other minor graphic details.
Final Fantasy VII

Attachment There are large quantities of cut content from the soapland 'Honey Bee Inn'. The content is as follows:

Whilst in the club, Cloud could end up in a bathtub with nine muscular men, peep through keyholes of occupied rooms, have makeup applied, and choose a room to stay in. You could have also encountered Palmer, head of the Shinra company's space program, coming from one of his regular "bath sessions". There was also a waiting room and employee's louge which players could visit and interact with NPCs.

Whilst some of this content was ultimately cut from the game, the unfinished content can be found on the discs of the original Japanese release and can be accessed through file hacks.

Attachment On the title screen, entering the Konami Code will play a short tone as if a cheat code was entered correctly, but pressing Start afterwards will instead send you to a black screen with the message "SORRY! NOTHING THIS TIME!". Based on existing coding for an additional cheat flag in the game's data, it's possible that this use of the Konami Code was originally meant to activate a different cheat that would grant 50 lives at the start of a new game, more in line with past uses of the Konami Code.

Early in its development, Nintendo planned on making the SNES backward compatible by having a second cartridge slot for NES games. Nintendo ultimately decided against it, as it would have made the SNES around $75 more expensive.
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
1
It was originally planned for the player to have sex with NPCs in the game, and there is plenty of unused text in the game's code to reflect this. In addition to this, there's text suggesting you were originally able to join the prostitutes guild and turn your character into a prostitute.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
1
Attachment Documents about Link's Awakening in the 2011 book "The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia" show an image with two characters fighting an enemy and a note next to it that reads "What're we gonna do about 1P mode?" suggesting the game was originally multiplayer.
Pokémon Gold Version

Attachment A Safari Zone was originally planned to be in the game, but removed at some point in development. As such, if accessed via a glitch or cheating device, there are no Pokemon to be found in the grass, but some can be found via fishing.
Harvest Moon DS Cute

The Japanese version of the game contains a "Best Friends" system, which effectively functions as a same-sex marriage. To avoid controversy, this was dropped from the North American version.
