The word Solid in the title has three meanings. The first refers to the main character, Soild Snake. The second comes from the fact that this was the first 3D Metal Gear game. The last meaning is a take on the rival company, Square. As Hideo Kojima said, "A square is a two- dimension thing. And I guess the president of Konami wanted this game to surpass Square. They wanted to make it a cube, you know, like solid 3D."

The XCOM Squad is a reference to the videogame XCOM: Enemy Unknown, which was also developed by Firaxis.

The unit image displays soldiers carrying the Heavy Plasma weapon. This is an energy-based weapon and does not fire projectiles. This weapon defends these soldiers in place of guns that leave behind metal slugs which would potentially rupture the hulls of space craft. Their armor is loosely based on the Titan Armour. Interestingly, the armour required extensive research of alien technology, and the weapon itself was created and designed by the aliens in question - despite there being no such alien invasion in the Civilization world (yet).

There is a variant of the pirate robot built by the Red Ribbon Army. Its description states:

"This giant robot bears the insignia of the Red Ribbon Army. Scanning indicates that this robot was designed for military purposes. The thick Geromatium armor on this robot makes it invulnerable to most conventional attack."

The original was built by pirates. Also, the name Geromantium refers to a character from the series named Dr. Gero.
