After recruiting Hugo, you can give him your Old Books and read them in the Castle's library on the third floor. In the Japanese version of the game, while reading these books, dataminers years ago found that a seemingly unused crudely-drawn sketch of the game's cover artwork was loaded into the VRAM. In reality, this sketch was not unused, but was actually part of an obscure Easter egg: a secret 9th Old Book. While highlighting the 8th Old Book titled "The Kalekka Incident", press Square, Circle, Triangle, and Cross at the same time. This will unlock the hidden 9th volume entitled "Hirotaka Development Diary" (presumably referring to the game's producer Hirotaka Ishikawa). A very rough English translation of the book's first four pages can be seen below:
The last two pages of the developer diary featured the crude sketch of the game's cover art alongside a request to mail in your opinions on the game to a listed address that is presumably somewhere in Kanda-Jinbōchō in Tokyo (Note: this full page has not been translated). It's not known if this secret is in the Sega Saturn version of the game, but it is confirmed to work on the PlayStation Portable port, Genso Suikoden I & II. However, this port has the last two pages (including the sketch of the cover art and request for opinions) removed, reducing it to four pages instead of six.
- Pages 1 & 2 -
(About the library)
"The Game Master used a ”Please/Favor Card”.

There are four unused cheat codes in Plok! that were disabled, each of which spells a word with the inputs of the SNES controller, and displays a message on screen. These were disabled, and therefore cannot be used under normal means:
• Right - Up - B - B - A - Down - Up - X (Rubber Ducks) - Displays "NINTENDO POWER" and warps the player to the Test Level
• Y - A - B - A - Down - A - B - A (Yaba Daba) - Displays "JOHN'S CHEAT" and gives the player 16 Buddy Hornets
• B - Right - Up - X - Y - A - Left - Left (Brux Y'all) - Displays "LYNDON'S CHEAT" and gives the player 160 shells
• Up - Right - B - A - Down - Left - A - Down (You're Bad, Lad) - Displays "BAD INFLUENCE!" and makes the player invincible for 13 seconds
Nintendo Power and Bad Influence are both the names of 90s-era gaming publications, meaning that there may have been an intent to share the codes through those platforms.
"John" is likely referring to Plok! co-creator John Pickford, while "Lyndon" and his code "Brux Y'all" refers to game designer and sprite artist Lyndon Brooke.
Plok! did not feature any rubber ducks, however, a later Pickford Bros. game, Wetrix, would, and the eventual Plok! the Exploding Man comic would feature the rubber duck from Wetrix as a main protagonist.

In the European version of The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland for Game Boy Color, there is a friendly message to hackers:
The described graphics do indeed exist within the game code. It is unknown who the first person to discover the images were, or if and how they were rewarded. Sadly, Roger W. Amidon has since passed away.
Hello There Pilgrim...
If you have hacked this ROM, you no doubt are reading
this text. This game is basically a 2 Meg. Game. However,
Nintendo, in their infinite wisdom, has decreed that the
smallest ROM they will produce for the Gameboy Color is
8 Meg. -- Now, what to put in that empty 6 Meg.? So, the
developers of the game decided to put .GIF pictures of
themselves into the game. Why not? Might as well fill the
void with something entertaining. See if you can retrieve
them from this ROM. If you do, you win the prize. Please
call (609) 466-2092 (in New Jersey, USA) if you have been
able to view the two .GIF pictures, located in the rest of
the upper 6 Megs of this ROM. We will have a nice reward
for you...
Good Luck!

Alan Smithee, a now-discontinued pseudonym used by the Screenwriter's Guild of America for film staff who want to disown a project, has seen use in the gaming industry - the earliest documented use of the name in a video game can be found for the director of Equinox for SNES. The game's real director, John Pickford, explained in 2023 that he went credited as Alan Smithee because he was "pissed" about the large volume of content removed from the final game.

In the Blood and Wine expansion, you cannot access Mount Gorgon in Toussaint by normal means. However, there is a small grassy field on the summit of the mountain that can be accessed using mods. If you teleport Geralt there, you can find a blank canvas with a red blotch on it sitting in-between two columns. Using Witcher Sense to view the canvas will reveal a completed painting: a group picture of the game's developers at CDProjekt Red.

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), during the "Scorched Earth" campaign mission in Berlin, hidden in an alcove immediately to the left after walking into the Trivo Buchhandlung ("Trivo Bookstore" in German) are a shelf and display of books adorned with the names of numerous developers who worked on the game. The most notable kind of book in the display however features the name Guy Beahm and a black and red circle with a pair of sunglasses and a mustache. Beahm is better known by his online alias Dr. DisRespect, a character known for his over-the-top personality and appearance, including the same sunglasses and mustache that appear on the book cover. Beahm was hired by Sledgehammer Games as a Community Manager in 2011, and the following year accepted a Level Designer position in the studio. He is listed in the designer credits of Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the latter of which it is confirmed he designed multiplayer maps for. Beahm left Sledgehammer in 2015; this Easter egg went largely unnoticed until 2022.

The ending of Half-Life: Decay can be seen from the perspectives of either playable character in the game, Gina or Colette. If you see the ending from Colette's perspective, a brief shot of a broken computer can be seen with red electrical arcs shooting out of it. Connecting these arcs in an emulator reveals the initials "MA", the signature of Gearbox Software level designer Matt Armstrong, and a symbol that he would often hide in games he worked on.

In 2021, several cheat codes were discovered in the Game Boy version of the game, the first two of which must be activated through the title screen.
• Ending and Credits: Up/Down/Left/Right/Select/Start.
• Sound Test: Down/Up/Down/Up/Select/B.
• Level Select: While paused in normal gameplay, press Down/Select/Up/Left/Select/Right/B. Press A or B to select a level.
• Hidden tribute to Hiroko Kasahara: To access it, you must first access the Sound Test menu. Then, set the BGM/SE index to 02 and press A once, then set BGM/SE index to 19 and press A once more. Lastly, you must input the following lengthy code:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Left, Right, Right, Select, Select, Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Left, Right, Right, B, B, Up, Down, Left, Right, Select, Up, Down, Left, Right, B, Select, Right, Left, Down, Up, B, Right, Left, Down, Up, Select, Select, Right, Right, Left, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up, B, B, Right, Right, Left, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up, Start.
If inputted correctly, an alternate credits sequence will play out. The normal credits plays the game's ending theme and lists the name of programmer Yutaka ★Hiroko★ Sakashita among the game's developers. This alternate credits sequence instead plays the Vs. Mode music and lists the name Hiroko Kasahara at the top of the screen. Kasahara is a J-Pop singer, and the names of the game's developers in the credits are replaced with a comprehensive discography featuring the names of several albums she had released up to 1993, including the release dates for her then-upcoming 1993 albums "L'Express Fantasie" and "Nature". Considering Sakashita used Kasahara's first name on the standard credits sequence, he is most likely the one who included this Easter egg to document his love of her music at the time the game shipped. The fact that this sequence is hidden behind two cheat codes that would take almost 30 years to be discovered, with one of them being too long to easily guess, suggests that it was never meant to be seen by players.

In 2022, an Easter egg was discovered after one of the game's developers hinted at its existence in the game's Discord fan server. In the Ungard Mines level, when you come to the big bridge, you can turn to the left to find two bags of gold. Pick up the first bag but leave the second bag alone, and then carefully walk to the end of each of the four diagonal support beams holding up the bridge. Afterwards, on the opposite end of the bridge, walk to the end of the carved out rock path on the left side and stand in the corner of the rock wall. If done correctly, the "Use" prompt should appear. After triggering it, you can turn around and see a developer credit written in magical colored lights hanging over the abyss: "J.A WAS HERE". This is in reference to one of the game's designers Jens Anderssen.

In the European release of the NES version, pressing Right on the logo screen for the game's publisher Storm will trigger a secret set of credits menus. This screen can also be accessed during any cutscene by pressing Right after the message at the current cutscene is displayed and the program is paused before the next cutscene screen and waiting for the input to skip it. This occurs because the input waiting routine is the same for the logo and for the cutscene waiting screens. The Japanese version of the game has no starting logo and the cutscene input logic is changed, but the credits are still in the game and can be accessed through hacking.
