The challenge "A Slave Obeys" requires the player to Spoiler:kill Mr. House with the 9 Iron or Nephi's Golf Driver. Attachment The "Kicker Skeleton" enemy wears a red scarf and attacks by leaping into the air with its arms outstretched, then delivering a flying kick. These two elements are a reference to the Japanese superhero, Kamen Rider, who is known for his flying-kick finishing move and his red scarf. If Soma acquires the Kicker Skeleton's soul, he will gain a flying-kick ability, and the enemy also has a chance to drop wearable "Red Scarf" and "Ancient Belt" items.

The Ancient Belt alludes to the many belts which give the Kamen Riders their powers. Its description explains that it "lends the wearer a positive attitude", a reference to Kamen Rider Kuuga, whose belt, The Arcle, was not only an artifact from an ancient civilization but who is also characterized by his unusually upbeat and optimistic personality. The "Ancient Belt" item's box-like design mirrors Kamen Rider Black's belt, the King Stone. Ironically, neither Kamen Rider Black nor Kamen Rider Kuuga wore scarves, unlike many of the early Riders.

Ed Annunziata, the game's head designer, cited English progressive rock band Pink Floyd as a major influence on the game's music. The band's 1971 song "Echoes" may be the origin for the protagonist's name, and one of the game's final levels, "Welcome To The Machine", may be a reference to the band's 1975 song of the same name.

The Swarthy Revenge Indigo dye is an obvious reference to the character Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride. This is supported by the statement in the description, "You have crushed its flowers. Ape Escape 2
subdirectory_arrow_right Space Fishermen (Game)
1
Attachment In Ape Escape 2, in "The Blue Babboon" and "Simian Citdel" levels, one-of-a-kind enemies exclusive to each stage can be found known as the "Space Can" and the "Submarine Lookalike" respectively, neither of which can harm the player in any way. Their Enemy Cards both mention that they "came to the wrong game". Ape Escape 2 was developed by Japan Studio and originally released in Japan on July 18, 2002.

A little over three months later on October 24, Sony published a Japan-exclusive game titled Space Fishermen, a collaboration between Japan Studio and the American animation studio Spümcø, Inc. under the name "Land Ho!". Both characters appear in the game as fish you can catch, presumably having found the correct game they were supposed to be in.
