Faceball 2000 is a port of an earlier first person shooter maze game called MIDI Maze for the Atari ST. The game constructed multiplayer networks using the MIDI interface, and up to 16 computers could be networked in a "MIDI Ring" by connecting one computer's MIDI-OUT port to the next computer's MIDI-IN port.
The Game Boy version of Faceball 2000 retained this networking capability, and is the only Game Boy game capable of supporting 16 players simultaneously. It did so by connecting multiple copies of the Game Boy's Four Player Adapter to one another, so that each additional adapter added another two players up to the maximum. Seven such adapters were needed for a full 16 player experience. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for "Most players on a single Game Boy multiplayer session".
