Following the release of Vermin, a set of imitation LCD games began to appear on storefronts that recycled CPUs from copies of Vermin and replaced the sprites with a soccer scenario. Game & Watch creator Gunpei Yokoi discovered this by replacing the overlay of a Taiwanese LCD soccer game with that of Vermin. However, while Nintendo was concerned about bootleg products potentially eating into sales of Game & Watch games, Yokoi was delighted to see these appear as he saw it as proof that his games resonated with people, believing that bootlegs can often take much as much work as creating something original, though also giving that as his reasoning for preferring to make original concepts.
