The game's cover was originally to feature both Chicago Blackhawks players Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, however, Kane was later removed from the cover with just Towes present due to an investigation at the time over an alleged rape that Kane was involved in with a woman at his home. Kane was also removed as a spokesperson for the game and any promotional activities for it.

The game's cover would've been the first time in the series history to feature two players instead of simply one.
