Mario Kart: Super Circuit is the first game in the series to feature a Lightning Cup. It is also the only Lightning Cup with original stages, as from Mario Kart DS onward, it only featured stages from previous Mario Kart games.

I get that Mushroom, Flower and Star all come from items Mario has had in every 2D adventure sans Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Run, but where could Lightning have come from when deciding on a 5th cup to accommodate 20 GBA tracks?
